ANNOUNCEMENTS
- (9 Dec) The term paper is due by 5 PM Tuesday 13 December. Please email it
or bring it to my office (if I am there) or leave it in my mailbox in the department
office and send me an email saying you did so.
- (5 Dec) The website https://aastex.aas.org/ has all of the documentation about
how to prepare a manuscript using the aastex package. It has a few sample templates
and the aastex.cls file, which has to be placed in the right spot on your machine.
I think the machines in 104 already have it loaded. Ask around if you are having
trouble. It is ok to use something like word, but make sure that it follows the
"correct" formatting (sections, title page, references, etc). Figures may be embedded
or placed at the back, whichever is easier for you (for submitted manuscripts, they
are not embedded). Send me your hints about how to get this running on your own
computer, and I will post them here to help others out...
- (29 Nov) On Wednesday I will pass out a copy of the study
hints for the 3rd exam, which will be held in class this Friday. There will
be a general knowledge, in-class exam with multiple-choice and short-answer questions,
and maybe a small calculation or two. There will be a second part that you will
complete over the weekend and turn in Monday during class. This will be a more
in-depth question/problem/essay, but it should not take you more than an hour to
complete. I would recommend reserving time right after class on Friday to finish
part 2 so that it doesn't spoil your weekend.
- (26 Oct) You can download a copy of the second exam and check out the latest
reading assignments at the Homework page.
I have a feeling that many of you have never looked at the Links
to Interesting Web Sites page. Many of you might find that your star is in the
"Star of the Week" archives, for example (there's lots of other good stuff at that
site.
- (25 Oct) Friday's class will be a guest lecture about topics in
stellar oscillations. Bob Dukes will also pass out the take-home
exam in class on Friday. I will be at Apache Point Observatory, but
I will be back Monday.
- (12 Oct) There will be no class meeting this Friday, 14 October, and
Monday is fall break. See you all next Wednesday.
Homework #6 was assigned today.
- (14 Sep) I put an applet help you
become more familiar with Blackbody Radiation on the website. There is
also a program called Spectrum Explorer on the public computers in 104 and the
laptop labs.
- (14 Sep) I passed out the 3rd homework set
today. On Friday, we will be doing a lab exercise
during the class hour. You will be assigned a star and then expected to complete the
exercise during the 50 minute period. If you have a laptop computer you might want
to bring it with you. A calculator will come in handy, too. The first
exam will be held on Friday the 23rd; I will pass out a study guide next Monday.
- (31 Aug) I will allow you to turn the first
homework set in on Friday.
- (26 Aug) OK, the web site is now officially operational. You may download
a copy of the first homework assignment
and the week's lecture notes.
- (23 Aug) This web site is not yet officially opened! I will
announce major additions to the web site on this page, but some areas will be
continually updated. For example, you should regularly check
the lecture schedule page, which has links to
summaries of each class. I will also be updating the
links page frequently. If you have
any suggested links, feel free to email them to me.
