At the University of Colorado, in the Department of Astrophysical, Planetary, and Atmospheric Sciences, (now called ``Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences; formerly called ``Astro-Geophysics Department''):
- Astronomy Labs (AG 121, AG 122): Team-Taught 4 sections (approximately 20 students/section) of an independent, introductory astronomy laboratory course. In addition to preparing, explaining, and supervising classroom laboratory exercises, this involved extensive field work with the facilities at Somers-Baush Observatory and at Fiske Planetarium. We did alot of astrophotography work with the students, including darkroom techniques.
- Tutor: Individual and Small-Group tutoring in all levels of undergraduate Math, Physics, and Astronomy, and even some basic Chemistry. This service was provided to students by the Housing Department (who employed me) and later by the University Learning Center. I do not have an exact count, but I tutored for several hours a night for about 3 nights a week for most of the time I was a graduate student. I worked with several hundred students through this program.
At the University of Iowa, in the Department of Physics and Astronomy:
- College Physics (29:11, 29:12): This was calculus-based physics course primarily for biological sciences majors (approximately 200 students each semester). I prepared the solutions and graded the weekly problem sets, protored exams, and graded exams. I also assisted students individually during office hours. I was a teaching assistant to Prof. C. Goertz (29:11) and Prof. G. Payne (29:12).
- Physics Lab: Full responsibility for three sections (15 to 25 students each) of the 3-hour/week laboratory course accompanying ``College Physics''. The lab facilities were provided and the basic experiments were set up for all sections, but I helped set them up each week, gave an introductory lecture of 30 or 40 minutes to provide the context, supervised the experiments, and graded the lab writeups.
- Engineering Physics (29:83): This class was a calculus-based introductory physics class for approximately 200 (primarily) engineering students. There was no accompanying laboratory. I graded the weekly problem sets, proctored and graded exams, and assisted students individually during office hours. I was a teaching assistant to Prof. R. Mutel.
- Beginning Physics (29:04): This non-calculus based introductory course was aimed at non-science majors, primarily nurses (approximately 150 students). There was no accompanying laboratory. I graded and distributed the solutions for the weekly problem sets, and I assisted students individually during office hours. I was a teaching assistant to Prof. E. Nelson.
